Benfica places faith in Ramos' 'remarkable' abilities ahead of Inter showdown |
BARCELONA: A lot of responsibility lies at the feet of Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos, who is aiming to fire his side past Inter Milan and into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
The forward has become accustomed to the pressure, rising to global football prominence during the World Cup in December where he was selected to start for Portugal over Cristiano Ronaldo in the last 16 against Switzerland. During the game, Ramos scored a hat-trick as Portugal triumphed 6-1, bringing him into the limelight after making his international debut just a few weeks prior in a friendly match. In the Champions League last 16 second leg against Club Brugge in March, the striker was exceptional, scoring two goals in Benfica's 5-1 victory, which secured their place in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive season.
The upcoming match against Inter in Lisbon presents an opportunity for Ramos to showcase his talents to potential suitors, just as numerous young Benfica players have done in the past, including Enzo Fernandez, who joined Chelsea for a record fee of 121 million euros ($133 million) after winning the World Cup with Argentina. Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, and Ederson are among others who have left the Portuguese club. After Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez last summer for an initial fee of 75 million euros ($82 million), leaving a vacancy up front, Ramos stepped up as the focal point of Benfica's attack. He had previously played a supporting role to Nunez and others since making his debut in 2020. Ramos, who joined Benfica at the age of 12 and graduated from the respected Seixal academy, is now being sought after by several of Europe's top teams, just shy of a decade later.
Several top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Chelsea, have shown interest in signing Benfica's striker, Gonçalo Ramos. The 21-year-old has impressed many with his performance, including former Barcelona player Patrick Kluivert. In March, Benfica coach Roger Schmidt praised Ramos for his exceptional attitude and his ability to score goals in the Champions League. Ramos has scored 17 goals in 23 appearances in the Portuguese league, helping Benfica to a seven-point lead at the top of the table. He has also scored seven times in 12 Champions League games, including the qualifying rounds. Ramos's performance has drawn comparisons to Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller, and he has been lauded for his work rate and finishing abilities. Although Benfica is yet to lift a trophy this season, Ramos's contribution has been crucial in their undefeated run in Europe.
