Iran should be expelled from the World Cup, the demand of the Ukrainian Football Federation from FIFA.
Accusing Iran of human rights violations and
supplying weapons to the Russian army, the Ukrainian Football Federation has
called on FIFA to expel Iran from the World Cup, which began this month in
Qatar.
According to the AP news agency, this demand of
Ukraine was made three weeks before the start of the first match of Group B
between Iran and England. The group also includes the United States and Wales.
The executive committee of the Ukrainian
Football Federation did not call for Iran to be replaced at the tournament by
Ukraine, which lost to Wales in the European play-off final in June.
Ukraine's proposal to replace Iran was
suggested last week by the country's biggest club, Shakhtar Donetsk, in a
similar appeal to FIFA.
FIFA has not commented on Ukraine's requests
and does not normally suspend member federations over military decisions by
national governments.
Russia and Iran have denied claims by an international
intelligence assessment that Russian forces bombed Ukraine using Iranian-made
'Shahid' drones.
FIFA's statutes also commit to 'respecting all
internationally recognized human rights' and endeavoring to promote the
protection of those rights.
However, FIFA did not live up to its human
rights pledge when it suspended Russian teams from international competitions,
including World Cup playoffs, within days of the invasion of Ukraine that began
in February. Instead, FIFA cited threats to the integrity of its competitions
and the decision was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
FIFA has already resisted calls from Iranian
fan groups to suspend the national team amid a crackdown on street protests in
support of women's rights.
