Former Australian Test captain Brian Booth has died at the age of 89.

Cricket Australia said on Saturday that Brian Booth was a "highly respected and admired" player, according to media reports.

The middle-order batsman played 29 Tests for Australia between 1961 and 1966, including twice as captain during the 1965–66 Ashes series against England as permanent skipper Bob Simpson was not part of those two matches. He scored 1,773 runs including five centuries at an average of 42.21. Booth also played hockey and represented Australia at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games.

CA chief Nick Hockley said Brian was held in high esteem by the entire cricket community. Condolences to his family on his death.
